The squad for the 2023 Women’s World Cup in South Korea is starting to come together and the tournament will start Down Under in July.
South Korea managed one goal in the three defeats of their 2019 group stage appearance, not recovering from a 4–0 thrashing of the hosts in the opening game. This time around, they’ll be playing Colombia first for games against Morocco and Germany: they hope they’ve scraped together a few good results to go into the final game against European giants who don’t have to pull a rabbit out of their hat.
2023 has also been a mixed bag of build up so far. 10 goals in two games against Zambia in April boosted morale after a meek Arnold Clark Cup that mirrored South Korea’s last World Cup (a 4-0 thrashing by the hosts, this time England, followed by two more defeats). However, South Korea were runners-up in the AFC Women’s Asian Cup last year – so should they move out of their group, they have experience with the heat of knockouts.
The majority of the squad still play in the Far East, but some of the stars are known to fans of the Women’s Super League. Tottenham Hotspur’s Cho So-hyun shares the appearance record with former Chelsea midfielder Ji So-yun: aged 34 and 32 respectively, this is likely to be a World Cup swan song for both. Lee Geum-min and Park Ye-eun – both from Brighton – round out the WSL contingent.
Youngsters come through in the form of Choo Hyo-joo and Jang Yu-bin – but with many players well into their thirties, this feels like a last hurray from the current Korean generation.
South Korea are in World Cup Group H with Germany, Morocco and Colombia, their first World Cup match is against Colombia on July 25 and below is their most recent squad before their World Cup squad is announced on July 9.

Who is the manager of South Korea?
Not to be confused with the Manchester City legend of the 1960s and 1970s, Colin Bell was a Leicester City defender who broke through a few years after Gary Lineker, but made a name for himself in Mainz, Germany, during the Cold War.
After coaching in Germany, being the Republic of Ireland women’s manager and even briefly assisting Huddersfield Town in 2019 under the short-lived Jan Siewert, he became South Korea’s first foreign coach after the last World Cup and led them to a maiden Asian Cup for Women in 2022.
When will South Korea’s squad be announced?
South Korea currently has no friendlies scheduled between now and their opening game against Colombia on July 25. The selection will probably be announced a few weeks before the start of the tournament.
How many players can South Korea bring to the 2023 World Cup?
The squad for the Women’s World Cup in South Korea will consist of 23 players. Despite requests from some countries to expand the size of the squad, as happened with the Men’s World Cup in Qatar, they will be limited to a smaller squad of just 23.
