Newcastle United will be dipped into the top four by Tottenham Hotspur, due to the lack of goals from the failed Magpies.
That’s according to Jermaine Jenas, who played for both in his career and believes that despite Eddie Howe’s men enjoying a phenomenal season of reaching a grand final and consistently finishing in the top four, they’ll just miss it promised land, comes the end of the campaign.
Speak against FourFourTwo as part of B&Q Energy Savers initiative (opens in new tab)Jenas says that despite predicting Tottenham to just beat Newcastle, he believes the future looks bright for Tyneside and that he has impressed with Howe this season.
“I think Spurs will finish in the top four, I think Newcastle will be just off,” said Jenas. “Newcastle have had a sensational season, there’s no doubt about that, but their [lack of] goals fascinate me. The final of the weekend illustrated that.
“Miguel Almiron has had a great season and they squeezed every ounce out of him, but can they keep that up until the end of the season? I’m not sure he can. Callum Wilson has been on a downward spiral with his form since his return from the World Cup. He has not been able to match the form that brought him to the World Cup.
“And Alexander Isak has had his injury problems: he will continue to be the leading light in the long run. So the goals don’t come to them that easily and I think they’ll fall a little short there at the end of the season.
Jenas was brought to Newcastle by the legendary Sir Bobby Robson – and he believes another beloved England coach, Eddie Howe, must be the man to take Newcastle to the next step, whether or not the club reach the Champions League this time around.
“I think the way Eddie Howe has handled the whole situation at the club, in terms of the fact that they can probably go and get whoever they want whenever they want, they’re handling it in the right way,” he said . say.
“They bring in good young talent, they take their time. There is certainly reason for the club to be realistic. I think Newcastle United will be a club challenging for Champions League places again as they were when I was at the football club. That was paramount to attracting the biggest players.
“As we saw over the weekend with that fanbase, they can continue to be a great force when it comes to competing for league titles for years to come. I really hope Eddie Howe rises to that challenge because you can see he’s really grown from his experience at Bournemouth and he’s ready for that challenge.”
Slightly lower in the pyramid than clubs focused on European football, Jenas has become involved in B&Q’s Energy Savers initiative to take a trip down memory lane to the ground where he grew up. The home improvement store’s initiative aims to help common areas become more energy efficient, with simple tips that people can apply at home to save energy.
“So it’s an energy saving campaign that B&Q itself is involved in,” he explained. “We took a trip to Welling United in south London and the idea behind it is clearly about community spaces and finding ways to ensure these special places for the community can save energy, from switching to LED lighting to conserving heat and giving them a few tips and tricks, essentially ensuring that some already very tight budgets are further saved.
“We have a current climate where the cost of living is a huge topic for everyone and when it comes to these community spaces and how important they are to everyone – and not just football pitches but other places I’m talking about – those little details are huge for keeping the lights on and common areas open.
“A big part of this campaign that B&Q wants to do is they want local people to vote for their own community spaces, they want to go up and down the country to collect about 300 and get in there to find ways for these spaces to save energy, save pennies and keep them running.
“Whether it’s football clubs staying open, kids coming back to a center or your local book club, I think wherever that may be, these spaces where people can go to escape a little bit are really important. “
