Chelsea are reportedly preparing to resume negotiations over a transfer of Benfica and Argentina star Enzo Fernandez after talks broke down earlier this month.
The Blues failed in their previous bid to sign the World Cup winning playmaker, with Benfica rejecting their bid to pay less than his release clause.
According to the Guardian (opens in new tab)that release clause is set at £106million – and Chelsea intend to try again to bring Fernandez to Stamford Bridge.
It’s already been a busy January transfer window for the Blues, who have made six signings for a combined fee of more than £200 million – including a loan of nearly £10 million for Joao Felix.
New regular signings include young French defender Benoit Badiashile and Ukrainian attacking sensation Mykhailo Mudryk, whose contracts run until 2029 and 2030 respectively. Such unusually long deals have led to allegations that Chelsea are breaking Premier League rules in the area. of Financial Fair Play (FFP) attempts to circumvent.
On Saturday, Forbes (opens in new tab) reported that Chelsea’s spending in January was so far higher than that of the 78 clubs in La Liga, Serie A, the Bundesliga and Ligue 1 combined, but Fernandez looks set to remain a serious target.
That is despite the Evening Standard (opens in new tab) claiming the Blues could be in trouble as they would have to pay Fernandez’s buyout clause up front – assuming they complied with it, which Benfica would apparently insist on.
After their initial failed attempt to sign Fernandez, Chelsea were accused by Benfica boss Roger Schmidt of troubling the Primeira Liga leaders.
But it doesn’t sound like that will stop the Blues from coming back for more – and this saga could take a few more twists and turns before the window slams on January 31.
