Chris Godwin to Bucs critics: “Talking is cheap”

The Bucs training camp can’t get here soon enough as it feels like the team is tired of hearing that many expect Tampa Bay to fail this season. The best way to prove everyone wrong is to show them every day in training and matches. Perhaps that’s why wide receiver Chris Godwin has attended every possible offseason session.

Godwin appeared on The Rich Eisen Show this Thursday and had a message for anyone who thinks the Bucs will be at the bottom of the barrel by the end of the NFL season.

Chris Godwin doesn’t buy the skepticism

“What I know is talk is cheap,” said Bucs wide receiver Chris Godwin. “You are paid to talk. A lot of people are paid to speculate about the season, because that’s what you guys do. But the way I look at it, if you guys look back a year ago, we were predicted to be one of the best teams in the league just based on the talent we had on our roster. As we got to the end of the season, we saw that it’s clearly not just the sheer amount of talent you can collect. There’s a reason we play the games.

“That sort of thing gives me a sense of calm because I know we have to go out and put the work in. No matter who’s playing, no matter who’s the quarterback, what plays are called, if we don’t get our team chemistry right, if we don’t all work together and pull the rope in the same direction, it’s going to be for naught. You can have as much talent as you want, but teams that play together, play as a team, can come in and beat the most talented team when there’s no P’s and Q’s.

“I think it’s up to us to go out and put some real work into it and for us to decide what the season is going to look like based on the kind of work we put in and how committed we are. I’m excited about this opportunity, no matter what the outside calls are, I’m excited to get to work with these guys and see what we can solve.

Bucs still has great players

Chris Godwin is spot on with his comment about expectations not always translating into reality. The Bucs were once again Super Bowl contenders in 2022 when Tom Brady announced he was coming out of a brief retirement to play again while still having a core squad intact.

But even after a 2-0 start, the Bucs faltered the rest of the way to an 8-9 record. Even though they won the NFC South division and hosted a playoff game, it didn’t feel very deserved, and Tampa Bay went out in the Wild Card Round after losing to the Dallas Cowboys, 31-14, in a game that wasn’t exactly close.

So if the Bucs didn’t come close to the Super Bowl wishes last year, why can’t they exceed everyone’s expectations in the 2023 season?

Yes, there is a big question about who will be the starting quarterback at Baker Mayfield. Yes, there is a lot of risk for Todd Bowles in hiring a new offensive coordinator in Dave Canales, who has never made a play call in the NFL before, especially when Bowles might be in the hot seat this season.

But the Bucs still have their best players. There’s a reason they were able to re-sign Lavonte David and Jamel Dean on defense. They also do not renew the offensive line and do not move Tristan Wirfs left tackle just for an experiment.

You can doubt the Bucs. It just doesn’t affect what they can do if they play to their ability.
