FIFA does not pay the players of the Women’s World Cup directly

FIFA President Gianni Infantino revealed that players will not receive direct payments for the Women’s World Cup. Instead, each team’s federation receives payments from the governing body and then disburses money to the players. Infantino’s announcement comes ahead of the Australian and New Zealand tournament.

‘We have issued advice, but we are an association of associations’ mention Infantino. “So whatever payments we make will be through the associations, and then the associations will make the relevant payments to their own players.”

FIFA announced earlier in June that each player participating in the 2023 Women’s World Cup will receive a minimum of $30,000. While this figure is still a fraction of what the men earn at their tournament, it is a significant increase from 2019.

FIFA claims that direct payments for the Women’s World Cup are not feasible

Infantino claimed on Wednesday that the possibility of FIFA making these payments directly to the players is ruled out. Alternatively, FIFA will continue to send prize money directly to each federation. However, the organization’s director said they are in contact with these associations to help distribute money to players.

“We are in contact with all the associations and there are all different situations in different parts of the world – taxes, residence, and so on – that require special agreements which for some associations are agreements with the players of old, of course,” Infantino claimed.

“So I think we’ve made some groundbreaking decisions and it’s far from the end of the story.”

Federations accused of not paying players sooner

Anyway, ESPN has reported that players have previously fought with federations over financial packages. This also applies to South African players who previously claimed that their federation withheld payments for the Women’s World Cup. Women’s players from Jamaica and Nigeria have also experienced similar situations.

The upcoming Women’s World Cup kicks off on Thursday, July 20. Some games are broadcast at unusual times here in the United States, as the competition takes place on the other side of the world. For example, the opening game between Australia and Norway starts at 3pm ET. The USWNT will begin their tournament against Vietnam on Friday, July 21 at 9:00 PM
