Comparison of MLS ticket prices for Messi matches in the US

The most expensive football game tickets in the US each year usually exclude MLS regular season games. But bringing in the biggest star in the game’s history could upset the status quo. And that is exactly what happened this summer. MLS ticket prices for matches involving Messi have skyrocketed above the norm.

Messi’s new club, Inter Miami CF, averaged just over 12,000 fans per game at their 18,000-seat temporary home stadium in Fort Lauderdale last season. In their three campaigns to date, they have finished in 19th, 20th and 12th place. So far this year, they have accumulated the second fewest points in the league and are last in the Eastern Conference. That is to say, they haven’t exactly been a high-demand ticket.

That all changed on June 7 when news broke that Messi would be leaving PSG for Inter Miami.

According to data collected by Logitixhere are the most expensive average ticket prices for MLS venues for matches featuring Messi (* denotes a Leagues Cup match, all other matches are MLS regular matches).

Inter Miami’s stadium is the smallest in the MLS, but no plans to move home games to a larger venue nearby have been announced so far. There are several logistical and commercial issues that would make hosting games at venues such as loanDepot Park (Marlins, Little Havana), Hard Rock Stadium (Dolphins, Miami Gardens) or FAU Stadium (Florida Atlantic University, Boca Raton) difficult, but that is another story.

With a limited number of seats, tickets for home matches should have a very high price. However, it’s interesting to note that away games at much larger NFL stadiums in Chicago, Atlanta, and Charlotte currently have higher average ticket costs than most Miami home games.

Whether Messi is the talisman to help Inter Miami win or not, he is now the main attraction for the league. And fans across the country will pay a pretty penny to see the latter part of a legend’s career in seasons to come.
