CBS could be the destination for more football leagues in the future

CBS Sports is making itself an attractive destination to add more football leagues in the future.

Currently, CBS broadcasts Serie A, the Scottish Premiership, UEFA club competitions, NWSL, Brasileirão, Argentine league and several other leagues and leagues. This also applies to the UEFA Champions League, which attracted an average audience on CBS for the 2022/23 season. It’s certainly the biggest football league on CBS’ roster. But that shouldn’t cause some of the smaller leagues that aren’t on CBS Sports and are looking for exposure to turn away from CBS. At the very least, leagues should look at CBS’s growth as an opportunity to grow the audience.

While the five major leagues in Europe have been snatched up by CBS, ESPN, NBC and beIN SPORTS, any of these would be a great landing spot for leagues looking to grow their audience.

Not only is CBS consistently promoting all of its properties, but it just has an opportunity to diversify where these games are shown. With some of these free, there’s a chance for easier access to lower leagues.

Why more football leagues should check out CBS

More broadcast options

CBS has the rare opportunity to broadcast on several “channels” in its properties. The linear CBS channel is free and over the air. However, that is reserved for only the biggest games. The recent UEFA Champions League final was on CBS. In addition, select NWSL games will move to the channel. For leagues that may be looking for a new broadcast location, all likelihood points away from the CBS TV network hosting games.

That being said. Paramount+, the CBS Sports Network and the new CBS Sports Golazo Network present three strong candidates to present games. Paramount+ is most likely. The paid subscription service is the more traditional home of the Champions League, Europa League, Europa Conference League, Serie A, Scottish Premiership and more.

Free 7-day trial

The easy case for a competition targeting Paramount+ would be the paywall. While that’s something almost all leagues are now behind, Paramount+ hasn’t slowed down in terms of viewers and subscriptions. Although Paramount+ increases in price by $1, it remains one of the most valuable options for football fans. That affordability could have American football fans looking for more content to watch with interest as well.

In addition to Paramount +, CBS Sports Golazo Network is free and has a lot of football content. In addition to Morning Footy and Box 2 Box, the Golazo Network also has live broadcasts of games. Often these are the less popular leagues and leagues. Nevertheless, leagues looking for a new home could skyrocket their viewership on the free and accessible CBS Sports Golazo Network. US Open Cup matches have definitely received a boost, for example.

Entertaining cover

Something CBS does well, especially on the CBS Sports Golazo Network, is its coverage. Whether that’s Serie A or the exceptional work on the UEFA Champions League, CBS offers entertaining coverage that’s also analytical. The challenge facing the broadcaster is to take that work and help it grow the popularity of the leagues in the US.

As mentioned, that works in tandem with the UEFA Champions League and record viewership stats. Obviously, CBS has a vision, and that comes down to the VP of Production at CBS Sports, Pete Radovich. With social media at the forefront of what CBS does in its studio coverage, leagues big and small could see their popularity grow through CBS.
