The squad for the 2023 Women’s World Cup in Switzerland is now coming together La Nati preparing for just their second appearance in the tournament.
Switzerland finished second in their qualifying group behind Italy and needed the playoffs to reach the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. A last-minute winner in extra time in their deciding game with Wales saw them reach the tournament in dramatic circumstances.
Switzerland is ranked 20th in the world and is an inexperienced nation on the international scene, having only had one previous World Cup, in 2015. On that occasion, they reached the round of 16, with Canada knocking them out 1–0 at home. A failure to qualify in 2019 means they have something to prove this time around, but their team is certainly strong enough to compete.
Goalkeeper Gaëlle Thalmann, Arsenal duo Noelle Maritz and Lia Wälti and Barcelona striker Ana Maria Crnogorčević have all made at least 100 appearances for their countries and will prove to be key players in their quest to reach the knockout rounds once again. Crnogorčević is of particular note, having scored 70 times in 145 international matches and is joined by Fabienne Humm and Alisha Lehmann in attack, making them a feared opponent for sure.
Ramona Bachmann will also hopefully be back from injury, the 32-year-old a prolific striker with 57 goals in 130 appearances for Switzerland.
A failure to win in any of their four 2023 fixtures isn’t ideal preparation, however, and manager Inka Grings hopes her aggressive footing will prove too much for their opponents.
Switzerland are in World Cup Group A with New Zealand, Norway and the Philippines, their first World Cup match is against the Philippines on July 21 and below are the most recent call-ups ahead of the announcement of a World Cup squad.
