The Dallas Mavericks pulled the trigger on a huge deal ahead of the NBA trade deadline, acquiring Kyrie Irving from the Brooklyn Nets. They traded Spencer Dinwiddie, Dorian Finney-Smith, a 2029 first round pick and two second round picks to bring the All-Star point guard to Dallas.
There has been a lot of discussion about how Irving will live with Luka Doncic. Doncic has never played alongside someone of Irving’s caliber before and it will take them a while to develop chemistry and cohesion with each other.
Both are dominant isolation players who are used to often having the ball in their hands, something that will change a bit by working together.
Much attention has also been paid to how long this relationship could last. Irving is a free agent this season and is already facing some questions about where he could end up this summer. But that’s not something he wants to talk about as he politely asked media members to keep the focus on the present with the Dallas Mavericks.

“It creates an unwarranted distraction for us and our team,” Irving said before speaking in his first Mavericks home game. “I’ve dealt with it before, and it’s very emotionally draining asking questions like, ‘What’s the long run? What is the long term?’”
Nothing positive can come out of Irving being constantly asked about his future for the Mavericks. If it’s any indication of how the Boston Celtics fared during the 2018-19 season, it could derail a team, no matter how positive their outlook may be.

Irving, despite some of his offenses in recent seasons, has grown tremendously since his time with the Celtics. He has a better understanding of what it means to be a leader and shows some admiration for the work LeBron James did when they teamed up with the Cleveland Cavaliers, something he admittedly didn’t always appreciate.
As part of his request not to be asked about his future, he mentioned how it could negatively affect the Mavericks. Dallas is currently ranked fifth in the Western Conference and any outside distraction leading to a slip could take them out of the playoffs altogether.
“I will say that from the beginning, from the moment I came here, there has been nothing but a warm embrace, nothing but sincere love, and nothing but a familiarity of relationships that I can really look to in times of doubt or confusion ,” Irving said. .
“There’s just a positive note there. I just take it day by day. That’s all I can do in this life. What the future holds is really only determined by what I do now and how I prepare for those next steps, which is being the best teammate I can be in that locker room and a great leader here and within the Dallas community and within the NBA. I just stay myself.
“So I just put that to bed and just focus on what we have ahead of us as a team.”
With only 23 games left in the regular season, there will certainly be pressure on Irving and Doncic to get on the same wavelength and carry this team into the postseason.
